Hi, my name is
Justin fink and I am going to run the Jr. Iditarod
in Alaska. I live in Gladwin, Michigan and will be
training from September to the day of the race.
I will be participating in many races before then to
get me ready for it. I have been ‘mushing’ for 3 years now and have
done very well. I placed in the top 5 in all of my races last year. I
took 4th in the Jack Pine-30 race in Marquette, MI.
The
race will be a total of 174 miles with a team of my best 10 dogs. I will attempt to compete
against the best in the sport.
I
have been a Boy Scout for 3 years and in that time I have earned my
Eagle Scout award in Troop 779. I am currently a Venture Crew 7799 LHAC
(Lake Huron Area Council). In my 4 years of scouting I have earned 49
merit badges and 4 palms.
All of my Boy Scout experiences should be helpful in
this race.
The
way I started dog sledding was my sister
had wanted sled dogs for a wile so she found this
sprint club called M.U.S.H. we went there to find
some of the nicest people that you could ask for.
They gave my sister a ride on a rig and from there on we were hooked.
One of the people pointed us in the direction of some dogs. We started
off the kennel with 5 sprint dogs. We soon started attending races
& rig sessions. But soon wanted more dogs, more miles, and more
challenge.
Soon after that decision was made we went to a boy
scout camp with our Council and was asked to help a guy with a demo
about you guessed it dog sledding and he just had to bring his best dog
in that I soon found out was for sale. So we did the demo and after the
demo was done he said that he was looking to get rid of some dogs well
being me I jumped on that admittedly. Well then we had 7 more dogs but the difference was
these dogs had ran the Iditarod in 2007 so these were not in the least
bit sprint dogs so we started to up the miles and get more dogs and do
more races. We had help from so many people along the way that there
are to many to mention I thank all the people that got me here I could
not do this without you. All of the little and big things matter to me
so thank you!
